TECHNICAL DETAILS - 1980 DIVISION 1 CAR


Engine:
Ford Cosworth BDA inline four-cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder, DOHC, alloy head. Equipped with KKK/K27 turbocharger (twin K26s tested also) boosting to 1.5 bar. 'Kent 1300cc' iron block, extra oil and water cooling. Capacity 1745cc (87.4mm bore x 72.75mm stroke) = 2445cc after x1.4 turbo multiplication. Bosch-Kugelfischer mechanical injection. 16 litre dry sump. Garrett twin intercoolers at front

Output:
1.5 max bar boost giving 560 bhp @ 9000 rpm

Fuel System:
Bosch injection, transistorised

Transmission:
Getrag 265/5-speed. Sachs twin plate clutch. ZF 90% torque differential.

Chassis & Body:
Space frame chassis from welded alloy piping. Quick lift jacks. Kevlar 49 reinforced plastic coachwork with skeletal Capri steel cockpit area. MacPherson/live axle suspension, alloy hubs. Side rads and coolers. Deep front spoiler with splitter and separate rear wing. As of summer 1980, incorporating central venturi 'ground affect' tunnel & side skirts (fixed).

Wheels & Tyres:
BBS, 11.5" rim x 16" tyre (front). 14" rim x 19" tyre (rear). Dunlop 280/600 (front) 330/700 (rear)

Brakes:
Ate 4-piston, 12.87" vented disc (front). Girling 4-piston, 11.86" vented disc (rear). Cockpit adjustable.

Dimensions and Weight:
Wheelbase 2560mm, length 5060mm, width 1980mm, height 1150mm and weight 790kg.

Performance: up to 186 mph

Engine:
Ford Cosworth BDA four cylinder, alloy head with 16 valves. Equipped with KKK turbocharger, boosting to 1.5 bar. Capacity 1427cc (80mm bore x 71mm stroke). Zakspeed assembly, some Cosworth components.

Output:
1.5 max bar boost giving 460 bhp @ 9200 rpm (originally 380 bhp)

Bosch injection, mechanical

Wheels & Tyres:
BBS, 10" rim x 16" tyre (front). 12.5" rim x 19" tyre (rear). Goodyear 10.0/225x16 (front) 12.5/27.5x19 (rear)

Chassis & Body:
Space frame chassis from welded alloy piping. Quick lift jacks. Kevlar 49 reinforced plastic coachwork with skeletal Capri steel cockpit area. Plexidur 3mm glass. Integral roll-cage and extinguisher system. Aerospace quality electrical wiring. MacPherson/live axle suspension, alloy hubs. Side rads and coolers. Deep front spoiler and separate rear wing.

Dimensions and Weight:
Wheelbase 2560mm, length 5060mm, width 1980mm, height 1150mm and weight 790kg.

Performance: 168-174 mph. 62-124 mph in 9.6 seconds (geared for rolling start).

Possibly used by Manfred Winklehock (Liqui-Moly/Nigrin) as the 'Killer Capri' in Division 1 in 1981

There were almost certainly other racing chassis built but the quantity and chassis I.D. are unknown

There were also at least two show cars built by Zakspeed. ZAK CA1981-1 is owned by Ford Team RS and housed in Cologne. There is a second show car (chassis number unknown) on display at Sinsheim Auto & Technik Museum
